Massage as Health and Human Care: Dr. Tibbett’s Story

What My Past has Taught Me:

My experiences with my Dad taught me:

  1. Preventative wellness saves lives.
  2. When a health provider gives undivided, hands-on attention, magic happens.

Now I’ve spent my career on different sides of health, earning a PhD in neurophysiology, and practicing hands-on magic as a massage therapist.

Hi, I’m Jacqueline Tibbett, and I’m here to help you meet your health goals through massage, movement, and education.

My life is strongly influenced by my childhood experiences. My father’s severe stroke, which left him physically and mentally disabled, drove my curiosity about neuroscience. In college I studied biochemistry and psychology. For my doctorate research, I studied how chronic pain and motor dysfunction are interrelated in people with spinal cord injuries. I was privileged to have world-class mentors at one of the best Spinal Cord Injury Research Centers in the world, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. I take pride in integrating neuroscience and massage to help people.

Massage Therapy as Healthcare and Human Care

I am passionate about elevating massage therapy as a healthcare practice through education, quality care, and through partnering with highly skilled and advanced massage therapists.

I practice and research using the “biopsychosocial model” of healthcare: the understanding that pain and dysfunction aren’t due to biological abnormalities alone. The function of the body, plus psychological and social factors all influence how someone develops and experiences a health issue. How people process sensations, their context and environment, their values, and the relationship with health providers all influence the path of disease and healing. Dr. Tibbett believes that decisions about her treatments should be made together with the client and focused on the client’s goals.

Education and Evolution

I now teach continuing education for massage therapists. Additionally, I teach as body awareness and self care workshops and classes for non-massage therapists. I have always had a love for movement, music and dance. I performed West African Ensembles and am an enthusiastic tai chi practitioner.
